In Vanuatu, small-scale farmers’ subsistence still largely relies on the sustainable use and maintenance of a wide-ranging biodiversity out of which root and tuber crops provide the bulk of daily subsistence. In neighboring countries, foreign influence since the first European contacts, further associated changes and the introduction of new crop species have induced a loss of cultivated diversity. This paper presents a baseline study of the diversity of root and tuber crops in ten communities throughout Vanuatu. In a context where (...) the smallholders’ agrosystems are increasingly considered as key components for the global conservation of crop genetic resources, this study provides clues to better understand the effective roles of biodiversity in traditional agrosystems. It also provides insights on the rationale behind the constitution of agricultural portfolios and discusses how the cultivated diversity allows communities to cope with changes and pressures. The paper also shows that recently introduced crops neither seem to have compromised agricultural diversity nor drastically changed the agrosystems in Vanuatu. On the contrary, such crops are used by farmers to strengthen the resilience of their agrosystems. A discussion then presents the idea of continuity through change and novelty as a critical factor for resilience. The paper concludes by discussing the role of indigenous agriculture and culture in ensuring food security and in development strategies in a larger context. (shrink)

New concepts may prove necessary to profit from the avalanche of sequence data on the genome, transcriptome, proteome and interactome and to relate this information to cell physiology. Here, we focus on the concept of large activity-based structures, or hyperstructures, in which a variety of types of molecules are brought together to perform a function. We review the evidence for the existence of hyperstructures responsible for the initiation of DNA replication, the sequestration of newly replicated origins of replication, cell division (...) and for metabolism. The processes responsible for hyperstructure formation include changes in enzyme affinities due to metabolite-induction, lipid-protein affinities, elevated local concentrations of proteins and their binding sites on DNA and RNA, and transertion. Experimental techniques exist that can be used to study hyperstructures and we review some of the ones less familiar to biologists. Finally, we speculate on how a variety of in silico approaches involving cellular automata and multi-agent systems could be combined to develop new concepts in the form of an Integrated cell (I-cell) which would undergo selection for growth and survival in a world of artificial microbiology. This article, corresponding to a part of the restitution of a financed international research project between France, Brazil, Canada, Italy and Belgium, aims to offer a modelisation and qualitative evaluation of mediation care settings based on an original methodological tool that involves identifying the typical games at the foundations of creativity, following a multidisciplinary perspective. Therapeutic mediations are settings or devices organised around a “pliable medium”, often artistic, like painting, modeling, writing, ​and theatre, which are very widespread in institutional practices, (...) both in France and abroad. The scientific objectives of this research consist in a multi-disciplinary exploration (anthropology, criminology, neuroscience, clinical psychology) of the process of creative symbolisation understood as a process of transformation involving play. According to this orientation, play can be defined as a psychic process whereby a subjective experience can be explored with pleasure, and consequently symbolised and appropriated. Our fundamental and original hypothesis is that play is at the source of the creative process, conceived as a work of metabolisation by the psyche of playful experiences during the different stages of life. The review of the understanding of play in psychoanalysis, anthropology, criminology and neuroscience emphasises the richness of this model and the importance of reflecting on the typical games in the field of psychic care. A clinical example of treatment in a pictorial therapeutic mediation setting of a child with psychotic disorders makes it possible to identify a number of typical games as well as the modalities of interpretation of the therapists through play. These multidisciplinary studies lead to the presentation of a general table of typical games, and these first results highlight the richness of identifying typical games in clinical settings. Ultimately, the multidisciplinary approach shows the interest of the model of play in the evaluation of therapeutic mediation settings, with a convergence of the different disciplines emphasising the pertinence of this model. The scientific impact of this research overlaps with its societal impact, through the development of innovative tools for evaluating therapeutic mediations, in order to take account of the evolution of the different forms of social expression of psychic suffering. In this article first appeared in 1997, Jean-Louis Chrétien examines the meaning of prayer in Kierkegaard’s writings and existence. By focusing on the difficulties of this task and with meticulous attention to the vast work of the Danish philosopher, Chrétien describes prayer as a tense and agonistic experience, akin to the evangelical struggle between Jacob and the angel. Just like in his well-known phenomenological analysis, “The Wounded Word: Phenomenology of Prayer”, the author identifies in prayer a paradoxical articulation (...) of struggle and peace, gift and endeavour, speaking and listening, through which the human being is profoundly transformed and finally learns to truly say “thank you”. The relation between morality and rationality (in the sense of rational choice and rational behaviour) is a prominent theme in (the tradition of) moral philosophy. D. Gauthier’s account of this relation is an extraordinarily impressive one. He attempts to demonstrate a general coincidence (at different levels) between rationality and morality. His approach is discussed in what follows, and it will be shown that most of his ‘coincidence claims’ are exaggerated.

Foucault a décrit quelques dispositifs qui articulent pouvoir et savoir, mais cela ne permet pas de rendre compte d’un certain nombre d’institutions ou d’appareils ayant affaire au visible – comme la perspective, le musée, la photographie, etc. – ou au musical – comme l’opéra ou le son. Ces derniers interviennent à un niveau plus fondamental, celui de la sensibilité commune ou du pré-individuel en faisant époque et monde. Dans cette série, le musée a une place à part puisqu’il sépare dans (...) l’œuvre d’art ce qui relevait de cette puissance de destination de l’esthétique elle-même. C’est la raison pour laquelle il n’appartient pas aux différents théâtres de mémoire qui donnent leur assise aux sociétés. Certes le musée peut être le lieu de l’histoire de l’art, mais surtout il fait entrer les œuvres dans une communication générale où la plus récente invente le passé comme sa cause matérielle. Jean-Louis Fournel, abordant la période des guerres d’Italie, tente de montrer comment ces nouvelles guerres modifient l’intensité et le rythme de la guerre guerroyée : la conscience d’une violence et d’une rapidité inédites fait planer une menace de mort sur les États eux-mêmes et la question de la guerre est dès lors placée au cœur de la pensée politique. Trois manifestations de ces « nouvelles » guerres marquent particulièrement les contemporains et autorisent l’analyste à évoquer ici une « (...) brutalisation » ou un ensauvagement des conflits, bien avant la Première Guerre mondiale qui a fondé récemment le développement d’une telle problématique : les sacs de ville, la mise en coupe réglée des territoires conquis avec le développement d’une véritable guerre contre les civils et, enfin, l’augmentation exponentielle du nombre de morts durant les batailles (du fait entre autres des modifications dans l’armement et du nombre de soldats constituant les nouvelles armées « nationales »). S’ensuivent des tentatives d’une nouvelle « humanisation », très relative des conflits armés fondée sur un nouvel examen du jus in bello (par opposition à une quasi disparition de la question du jus ad bellum). Il est notable à cet égard que le lexique de la « barbarie » est très peu utilisé chez les chroniqueurs et historiens des guerres d’Italie alors même qu’il a une forte présence chez les historiens et témoins des guerres de Religion en France. On peut se poser la question de savoir s’il ne faudrait pas voir là une certaine « rechristianisation » du discours sur la guerre. De la sorte, cette « rechristianisation » d’une partie de la réflexion sur la violence de guerre, au croisement du déclin de l’idéologie chevaleresque, des réflexions philosophiques, théologiques ou juridiques nées des massacres commis par les conquistadores dans le « nouveau monde » (Cortez avait fait ses premières armes sur les champs de bataille italiens) et des réactions face aux atrocités de la guerre civile, permettrait peut-être tout à la fois d’inscrire la barbarie dans le présent des conflits, de permettre un nouveau discours pacifiste, de confier paradoxalement au souverain comme instance laïque, au-dessus des choix religieux personnels, le rôle d’arbitre et de régulateur des guerres (cf. les politiques), et, enfin, de relancer la question du jus in bello (le jus ad bellum n’étant plus vraiment opératoire, pas plus que le rôle d’arbitre du pape qui s’effondrera bientôt définitivement dans l’Europe née du traité de Westphalie). Philosophical hermeneutics developed by the German philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer and founded on interpretation as explicit form of comprehension generated a debate on contemporary hermeneutics about texts written at different periods of time from those in which they must then be applied. This debate is necessarily very instructive for the jurist when he interprets texts and creates positive law to produce a determined effect on recipients. Comprehension as participation in truth involves questioning and an interpretation devoid of prejudices. Illustration of hermeneutics (...) in law demonstrates that interpretation related to comprehension is strictly bound to the question of application bearing in mind that application does not only consist in concretizing comprehension, it constitutes his nucleus. It follows that hermeneutics oscillates between a theoretical and practical meaning. Regarding the concept of a presumption it is perceived as an instrumental necessity and a necessary corollary of interpretation in that it anticipates on the meaning found on the possibility. It is specified in a context of legal hermeneutics that it is necessary to distinguish the interpretation of the observer from the one of the player such the judge put in the performative position. Celem pracy jest podanie reguł semantycznych dla logik, w których funkcjonują obok siebie funktory modalne i funktory deontyczne. Idea wspólnego traktowania tych funktorów. a w szczególności badania związków między nimi, została zapoczątkowana jeszcze w 1671 r. przez Leibnitza w "Elementa juris naturalis". Autor rozróżnia trzy następujące koncepcje dotyczące wzajemnych relacji między rozważanymi dwoma rodzajami funktorów logicznych: 1) koncepcję Leibnitza, wg. której konieczność implikuje obowiązek; 2) koncepcję, w której konieczność jest nieporównywalna z obowiązkiem; 3) zmodyfikowaną koncepcję [2] drogą pomysłowej modyfikacji znanej (...) semantyki Kripkego - autor wprowadza dodatkowe rozróżnienie światów na pozytywne i negatywne. Interesująco wypadają też porównania reguł semantyk dla trzech wymienionych wyżej koncepcji i rozważania wzajemnych powiązań czterech pojęć deontycznych: silnego obowiązku, silnego zakazu, słabego przyzwolenia i słabej "dowolności" - okazuje się, że spośród szesnastu możliwych relacji aż osiem spełnionych jest równocześnie we wszystkich trzech semantykach, Artykuł kończą uwagi na temat możliwych konsekwencji i zastosowań zaprezentowanego materiału. Plutôt que de prendre le parti d’une critique – par ailleurs légitime – des usages, notamment managériaux, de la compétence éthique, ce texte propose de prendre le concept au sérieux et de tenter de l’éclairer en s’appuyant notamment sur les approches pragmatistes des émotions développées par James, Dewey et Peirce. Plutôt que de privilégier une accentuation délibérative et argumentative des compétences éthiques favorisée par l’efflorescence et la multiplication des « comités d’éthique », il cherche principalement à penser les émotions comme (...) compétences éthiques, tout en en revendiquant une conception cognitiviste. Les « compétences éthiques » sont tout d’abord déployées sous les accentuations possibles de la responsabilité, distinguées selon la grammaire des pronoms personnels, comme autonomie, comme sollicitude, comme souci du collectif, comme accusation... L’éclairage pragmatiste des émotions comme compétences éthiques permet ensuite d’ouvrir à une approche renouvelée de l’« engagement » pensé comme compétence, couvrant un large spectre allant des engagements volontaires, obéissant à des décisions, jusqu’à des engagements à dominante émotionnelle caractéristiques par exemple des « communautés esthétiques », du ressentir, du vibrer ensemble. RésuméLes aspects théoriques les plus fondamentaux de la notion de complémentarité sont successivement étudiés.Dans la première partie la notion de complémentarité de Bohr est précisée et on montre de quelle façon cette notion est venue profoundément modifier les conceptions physiques. Dans une seconde partie la théorie générale des prévisions est résumée et ses principaux résultats sont énoncés pour permettre de mener ? une façon précise une discussion sur la notion de complémentarité: le problème des prévisions est ? abord posé, puis (...) décomposé en trois problèmes successifs grâce àľ introduction des eAléments initiaux et des eAléments de prévision.LCaron; opérateur ?évolution est ensuite défini. Puis on montre de quelle manière le calcul des prévisions conduit à une généralisation de la décomposition spectrale. II intervient alors une certaine fonction f dont la forme est déterminée. La notion de grandeur ?état est alors définie; lorsqu'il existe une telle grandeur le formalisme du calcul des prévisions se simplifle et se ramène au schèma ? un point en mouvement dans un espace de phases. Une théorie dans laquelle il existe une grandeur ?état est appelée théorie objectiviste. Par opposition une théorie telle qu'il n'existe pas de grandeur ?état est appelée théorie subjeetiviste. La fonction f a la forme |x|k; la constante k dans une théorie subjectiviste a une valeur unique et il est montré que k = 2: on établit ainsi comme un théorème le principe de décomposition spectrale, et cela pour toute théorie subjectiviste. On définit ensuite les grandeurs neutres, puis on fait la distinction entre les propriétés qui ont lieu en fait et celles qui ont lieu en droit. Les notions de déterminisme et dcaron; indéterminisme sont définies et il est montré qu'il n'y a que deux types de théories physiques: les théories objectivistes qui sont déterministes, et les théories subjectivistes qui sont essentiellement indéterministes.Dans la troisième partie la notion de complémentarité est diseutée en utilisant les résultats de la théorie générale des prévisions. On montre qu'il n'y a pas de complémentarités dans une théorie objectiviste et qu'au contraire il y en a nécessairement dans une théorie subjectiviste. Deux types de complémentarités peuvent se présenter: une complémentarité effective et une complèmentarité idéate, mais en fait il y a toujours des complémentarités effectives. Ensuite on examine les observations successives et les conditions qui se présentent suivant les complémentarités; on précise ce qu'on doit entendre par grandeurs complémentaires.La quatrième partie est consacrée à une interprétation du quantum ? action. Les différents aspects de la notion de quantification sont examinés , puis la constante de Planck est introduite au moyen de la notion de spin et au moyen du principe ? homomorphisme. Ľ origine de la subjectivité est examinée; un principe de subjectivité est énoncé et doit ètre mis à la base des théories de la microphysique; au contraire un principe ? objectivité doit ètre mis à la base de la physique macroscopique.La cinquième partie concerne les rapports entre les notions de complémentarité et ? indiscernabilité.Enfin la complémentarité de Bohr apparaît sous un aspect dialectique quand on ľ envisage comme provenant de ľ unification de deux théories qui s'opposaient au moyen ? un dépassement . – J.‐L. On the other hand, with this strategy, the argument of a function is re-evaluated at each time it is used.To avoid this drawback, we define the notion of “storage operator”, for each data type. IfT is a storage operator for integers, for example, let us replace the evaluation, by leftmost reduction, ofϕτ (whereτ is an integer, (...) andϕ anyλ-term) by the evaluation oftτϕ. Then, this computation is the same as the following: first computeτ up to some reduced formτ 0, and then applyϕ toτ 0. So, we have simulated “call-by-value” evaluation within the strategy of leftmost reduction.The main theorem of the paper (Corollary of Theorem 4.1) shows that, in a second orderλ-calculus, using Gödel's translation of classical intuitionistic logic, we can find a very simple type (or specification) for storage operators.
